I have fixed the problem of feeling overwhelmed by doing MORE rather than doing LESS. As Dr. K of Yale University explains in this lecture, we feel overwhelmed when our ratio of "active challenges" to "passive challenges" becomes too low. What does that mean? An active challenge is a challenge you choose, like going to your jiu jitsu class and sparring or taking an online college course in IT, whereas a passive challenge is a challenge that you did not choose: like finding yourself unemployed for an extended period of time, paying taxes, or losing something precious and dealing with the aftermath of that. Regardless, when I was first was unemployed back in New Jersey, I let myself get overwhelmed and thought I instinctually thought I needed to do less to feel less overwhelmed... but obviously "doing less" and socializing with people less had the opposite effect. When I came to Alabama, I had realized the importance of networking, but only now do I truly appreciate what it means to "be well rounded." God made this possible when he finally allowed me to believe in myself and believe in Him and His omnibenevolence.
I have been going to bible studies at 6AM, going to church every Sunday, volunteering to do correctional outreach, volunteering at a soup kitchen, publishing my writings, creating my websites, creating my business card, finding a D&D game, and finally launching my podcast. For my podcast, I will begin by interviewing the authors of some of the best non-fiction books I have read. This will satiate my need for intellectually stimulating conversations where I am challenged, where I learn where I am ignorant, share ideas, and grow from speaking with many of the smartest and most exceptional people in their respective field. Seth Godin, for example, is the king of books about marketing and he has written almost a dozen NYT-bestselling books on the subject. I would love to speak with him, but I'd be more than happy to speak with Bob Giblreath first, author of my favorite book on marketing The Next Evolution of Marketing: Marketing with Meaning. I believe that a podcast about marketing will make it far much easier for me to get a marketing internship. In fact, one of my guests might be interested in hiring me after I have become quit articulate and lucid in my discussions of marketing.
The good part of my life has finally started! The first half was just directionless pain and suffering so let's make this second half count!
